📢 Advocacy & Campaign Spotlight

BCIL Disability & Community Support Expo – Next Week

With the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty taking place on 17 October, now is the perfect time to reflect on the challenges facing people experiencing poverty, inequality and disadvantage.

In 2026, the focus is on the human right to adequate housing. Having a safe, secure and suitable home is about much more than having a roof over your head. For people with disabilities and others facing disadvantage, access to appropriate housing can be closely connected to independence, health, safety and the ability to participate fully in community life.

BCIL Disability & Community Support Expo

To help raise awareness and bring people together around these issues, BCIL will host a Disability & Community Support Expo next Wednesday, 14 October, from 2pm to 4pm at Hartstown Community Centre.

The event will provide an opportunity for local people to find information, discover available supports and connect with community organisations. Visitors can explore information stands, collect useful community support booklets and leaflets, and contribute to a Fact Wall exploring the links between poverty, disability and homelessness.

There will be tea, coffee, refreshments as well as a few goodie bags creating a welcoming space to meet others, ask questions and share experiences.

📅 Wednesday, 14 October 2026

⏰ 2:00pm–4:00pm

📍 Hartstown Community Centre

With the event now just one week away, we encourage local people to come along, find out what support is available and join the conversation around disability, poverty, housing and inclusion.

⭐ Living Independently: Stories That Inspire

Peadar Breslin: A Remarkable Life of Faith, Music and Community

For the past seven years, Peadar Breslin has been a service user of Blanchardstown Centre for Independent Living (BCIL). Quiet and unassuming, Peadar may not immediately appear to be someone who has lived an extraordinary life. But behind his modest manner is a story that has taken him from Ireland to Africa, from teaching theology to developing African church music, and even to the Vatican, where he had the remarkable opportunity to celebrate Mass alongside Pope John Paul II.

Born in Dublin in 1938, Peadar grew up in a family with deep connections to Ireland’s revolutionary period. His childhood was also filled with music, sport and theatre, and it was during his school years that the foundations of his lifelong love of music began to emerge.

In 1956, Peadar joined the Capuchin Franciscans and began his religious studies. What followed was a career that would take him far beyond Ireland. Instead of travelling to Rome as originally planned, Peadar was given the opportunity to work in Zambia. He would eventually spend more than 20 years working across Africa, teaching, studying theology and working with communities in Zambia, Botswana and other parts of the region.

Music became a particularly important part of his missionary work. Peadar helped develop church music that incorporated local African traditions, working with musicians and communities to understand the cultural meaning behind different rhythms and songs. His work brought him into contact with people from many different backgrounds and demonstrated how music could help bridge cultural and religious divides.

His years in Africa produced countless memorable experiences, from composing songs during long journeys across southern Africa to helping establish a golf course that brought different communities together. Later, in Rome, he completed advanced theological studies before returning to Zambia to become rector of a seminary.

Today, Peadar’s life has entered a very different chapter. As a BCIL service user, he uses BCIL’s services to help him remain connected with his community and maintain his independence.

His story is a fascinating reminder that the people we meet through BCIL can have lives, experiences and histories that stretch far beyond what we might first imagine. Peadar’s journey is one of faith, music, travel and service, but above all, it is a story about people and the connections we make with one another.

Cinema at the IFI: Making Halloween More Accessible

Halloween is just around the corner, and for many of us that means spooky films, frightening stories and perhaps a few well-timed screams! But everyone should be able to enjoy the thrills and chills of the cinema, and accessibility plays an important part in making that possible.

The Irish Film Institute (IFI) in Dublin is helping to make cinema more inclusive through its Accessible Cinema programme. Selected screenings offer open captions for Deaf and hard-of-hearing audiences and audio description for blind and vision-impaired audiences. All three screens have hearing loops and are wheelchair accessible, while guide and hearing dogs are welcome. Personal assistants can also attend free of charge where applicable. IFI Accessible Cinema

This October, the IFI is also bringing back Horrorthon, its annual celebration of all things horror, running from 22–26 October. So whether you’re a fan of classic horror, supernatural scares or something a little more gruesome, there are opportunities to enjoy the spooky season with accessibility in mind.

Accessibility shouldn’t be something that scares us off! By removing barriers, venues like the IFI are helping ensure that disabled people can enjoy Ireland’s arts, culture and entertainment alongside everyone else.
