Carol Brill, Founder & Chair at Usher Syndrome Ireland. Usher syndrome (USH) is a rare genetic condition that primarily affects hearing and vision. Its main symptoms include sensorineural hearing loss and retinitis pigmentosa (RP), a progressive eye disease that causes gradual vision loss, leading to night blindness and tunnel vision. Some individuals with Usher syndrome may also experience balance difficulties due to vestibular issues. It is the leading genetic cause of combined hearing and vision loss, also known as dual-sensory loss or deaf, blindness, affecting an estimated 400,000 people worldwide.
