Breathing is something most of us rarely think about—until it becomes difficult.
On Disability Matters, John Comiskey speaks with Ruth Morrow from the Asthma Society of Ireland about one of the country’s most common chronic health conditions and why education, awareness and proper management can make a life-changing difference.
Asthma affects hundreds of thousands of people across Ireland, yet many still underestimate how serious the condition can be.
During the conversation, Ruth explains that asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways. While there is currently no cure, the condition can usually be managed successfully with the right treatment and support.
“Asthma doesn’t have to stop people living full and active lives. The key is understanding your condition and managing it well.”
Throughout the interview, Ruth discusses the symptoms that should never be ignored, including:
- persistent coughing
- wheezing
- chest tightness
- shortness of breath
She explains that these symptoms can vary from person to person and may change over time.
One of the strongest messages from the interview is that asthma should never be dismissed as “just a bit of wheezing.”
“Asthma attacks can happen very quickly. Recognising the warning signs early can save lives.”
John and Ruth also discuss common asthma triggers such as pollen, dust mites, pet dander, exercise, viral infections, smoke, cold air and air pollution.
The conversation highlights the importance of identifying personal triggers and working with healthcare professionals to create an individual asthma management plan.
Ruth also explains why taking preventer medication regularly is essential—even when symptoms seem under control.
“Feeling well doesn’t always mean your asthma is under control. Following your treatment plan every day is one of the best ways to prevent serious attacks.”
Another important part of the discussion focuses on education.
The Asthma Society of Ireland provides trusted information, educational resources, a dedicated nurse-led Adviceline and ongoing support for individuals and families living with asthma.
Whether someone has recently been diagnosed or has lived with asthma for many years, knowing how to recognise worsening symptoms and when to seek medical help can make an enormous difference.
John and Ruth also explore:
- why regular asthma reviews are important
- how children and adults experience asthma differently
- the importance of using inhalers correctly
- reducing stigma around invisible health conditions
- where people can find reliable advice and support across Ireland
The interview is a powerful reminder that while asthma may be common, it should never be taken lightly.
With the right information, treatment and support, people living with asthma can continue to work, study, exercise and enjoy everyday life with confidence.
