Make Way Day 2024: BCIL Advocating for Accessibility in Public Spaces

Make Way Day is a campaign that unites the disability community and the broader public to consider the needs of people with disabilities in our shared public spaces. Led by the Disability Federation of Ireland, this initiative represents a unique collaboration across Ireland, involving both voluntary organizations and local government sectors. Above all, it focuses on the experiences and needs of people with disabilities.

Mark your calendars for Make Way Day, happening on Friday, September 27, 2024, right in your neighborhood. Everyone is encouraged to participate in Make Way Day because thoughtlessness often creates significant barriers for people with disabilities. Many people are unaware of the issues and behaviors that impede their access and mobility.

With the support of local authorities and inclusion advocates, the campaign sheds light on issues such as:

  1. Blocked Footpaths: Cars or vans parked on footpaths obstruct the way for pedestrians, especially those with mobility challenges.
  2. Trip Hazards: Bicycles and motorbikes chained to lamp posts create hazards, particularly for visually impaired individuals.
  3. Obstructions: Illegally placed sandwich boards, forgotten bins, and barrels impede movement and accessibility.

We at BCIL are excited to announce our participation in Make Way Day in Dublin 15 on September 27th. BCIL is planning activities to highlight #MakeWayDay by sharing the lived experiences of people with disabilities and the everyday obstacles they face, which contribute to social barriers. In the video below from last year, you can learn more about the challenges people with disabilities face on a daily basis.
