“Mobility, safety, and freedom,” — John Mitchell about Impact of Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind

This week on Disability Matters, 12 June 2025, Patrick O’Donnell spoke with John Mitchell, a dedicated volunteer with Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind, about the organisation’s life-changing work and the powerful bond between people and their guide dogs.

Founded in 1976, Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind supports individuals with visual impairments and children with autism through highly trained service dogs. The organisation currently supports over 170 guide dog partnerships, 178 assistance dog partnerships, and a growing number of community support dogs placed in schools.

John shared how these dogs transform lives: “A guide dog offers mobility, safety, and the freedom to make your own choices. We’ve seen people return to full-time work and sport thanks to the confidence and independence their guide dog provides.”

Training a guide dog is a two-year process, beginning with puppy-raising volunteers and culminating in intensive training at the organisation’s Cork headquarters. Dogs are carefully matched with clients and undergo joint training with their future partners. “It’s not just the person who has to learn,” John explained. “The dog and the handler must learn to work together.”

In addition to guide dogs, assistance dogs support children with autism by improving safety and enabling families to enjoy daily life, like dining out or shopping. “The dog and child are harnessed together. If the child bolts, the dog anchors them. Over time, the bond itself prevents such behaviour,” said John.

The organisation relies heavily on volunteers and fundraising to continue its work. Each dog partnership is provided at no cost to the client, including veterinary care and food. With 85% of the €5 million annual budget raised through public donations, fundraising events are vital. These include nationwide walks, mini-marathons, corporate partnerships, and the popular Sponsor a Puppy scheme.

John also highlighted the rise of community dogs in schools, which help support children’s emotional wellbeing. “It’s a significant commitment, but the impact is profound. The dog becomes part of the school day and brings calm and comfort to students.”
