Breathing Matters: Understanding Asthma in Ireland with Aiden Long

In a recent conversation, John Comiskey speaks with Aiden Long, Communications & Strategic Engagement Manager at Asthma Society of Ireland, shedding light on one of Ireland’s most widespread yet often misunderstood health conditions—asthma.

What is Asthma?

Asthma is a chronic condition affecting the airways, making them hypersensitive to triggers such as pollen, cold air, smoke, or dust. When exposed, the airways can become inflamed, narrow, and filled with mucus—making breathing difficult.

As Aiden explains, asthma affects people differently. Some experience mild symptoms, while others may face severe and frightening asthma attacks.

A Widespread Condition in Ireland

Ireland has one of the highest rates of asthma globally. Around 450,000 people currently live with asthma, and nearly 890,000 people will experience it at some point in their lives. Alarmingly, Ireland also has one of the highest asthma-related death rates.

Asthma can develop at any stage of life and often runs in families, making awareness and early management essential.

Triggers and Treatment

There is no single cause of asthma, but common triggers include:

  • Air pollution and smoke
  • Cold or damp weather
  • Allergens such as pollen or mould
  • Respiratory infections

Treatment is highly individualized. Most people rely on:

  • Controller inhalers (daily use)
  • Reliever inhalers (for flare-ups)
  • In some cases, steroid treatments or advanced biologics

A key message from the interview: proper inhaler technique and consistent use are critical.

The Importance of Self-Management

A central tool promoted by the Asthma Society is the Asthma Action Plan—a personalized guide developed with a healthcare professional. This helps individuals:

  • Identify triggers
  • Manage symptoms
  • Respond effectively to worsening conditions

Support is also available through a free advice line and WhatsApp service, connecting patients directly with qualified nurses and healthcare professionals.

Clean Air and Public Health

Air quality plays a major role in asthma management. Pollution from fuels, traffic emissions, and poor housing conditions can significantly worsen symptoms.

The Asthma Society actively advocates for cleaner air policies, highlighting the broader public health impact—both in Ireland and globally.

Living Well with Asthma

With proper management, most people with asthma can live full, active lives. Exercise, work, and daily activities are all possible when the condition is under control.

As Aiden emphasizes, education and support are key:

“For the vast majority of people, asthma shouldn’t limit your life if it’s properly managed.”
