Breaking Barriers, Building Acceptance: Adam Harris on Autism in Ireland

On a recent episode of Disability Matters, host John Comiskey spoke with Adam Harris, founder and CEO of As I Am, Ireland’s national autism charity. The discussion explored what autism is, the challenges faced by autistic people and their families, and the vital role As I Am plays in advocacy, support, and community change.

What is Autism?

Autism is a lifelong developmental difference that shapes how a person communicates, interacts with others, and experiences the world. It is often referred to as being on a spectrum, meaning no two autistic people are the same.

“Autistic people often have scattered skill sets,” Adam explained. “The areas we’re passionate about, we can be very strong in—while in other areas, we might need significant support.”

In Ireland today, it’s estimated that 1 in 20 school-aged children has an autism diagnosis. Many are also multiply neurodivergent, living with more than one condition.

The Challenges Families Face

For parents, the journey often begins with questions about developmental milestones—speech, communication, or sensory responses. But navigating Ireland’s healthcare system is daunting.

Although the Disability Act 2005 sets out a child’s right to an assessment within six months, in practice many families wait years. Nearly half have to go privately for diagnosis, only to face further delays in accessing therapies or appropriate school placements.

“It’s not autism that creates the barriers,” Adam stressed. “It’s the world failing to meet autistic people’s needs.”

Supports and Services from As I Am

Founded in 2014, As I Am has grown into Ireland’s leading autistic-led charity, with half its team and board made up of autistic people. Its work falls into two main areas:

  • Direct Support for Families and Individuals
    • Autism Information Line
    • National support groups for children and adults
    • Autism ID cards to help access understanding in public spaces
    • The Child and Family Support Programme, including inclusive events and resources
  • Training and Advocacy
    • Autism-Friendly frameworks for schools, workplaces, and communities
    • Outreach programmes to tackle stigma and create inclusive environments
    • Research and public awareness campaigns

As I Am also provides practical tools, from visual resources that prepare children for new experiences to quiet spaces in public venues.

Autism Across the Lifespan

While much focus is placed on children, Adam reminded listeners that “you’re an adult for far longer than you’re a child.”

Adults on the spectrum often face barriers in employment and housing. Unemployment among autistic people is estimated at 85%, with stigma and lack of workplace support a major factor.

“Most autistic people would like to tell their boss they’re autistic,” Adam said. “But 60% don’t—for fear of being treated differently.”

Advocacy at National Level

As I Am has been instrumental in shaping policy. In 2023, Ireland published its first Autism Innovation Strategy, setting out 83 actions in a short 15-month period. Adam emphasised the need to legislate for a permanent strategy, ensuring real, long-term change.

The charity also highlights the hidden costs of autism, with research showing it costs families an extra €28,000 per year to raise an autistic child. As I Am is calling for a Cost of Disability payment to recognise and offset these expenses.

Building an Autism-Friendly Ireland

From quiet shopping hours to autism training in public services, the movement towards an autism-friendly society is growing. But awareness isn’t enough—what’s needed now is acceptance and action.

“Awareness can happen on your couch,” Adam said. “Acceptance is what happens when you change your community.”

Final Thoughts

Adam, who was diagnosed with autism as a child and founded As I Am at just 18, sees autistic-led advocacy as essential:
“Half our team is autistic. We’re raising a generation of autistic advocates who are changing the narrative from ‘about us’ to ‘by us.’ Everyone deserves the same chance—and that’s what we’re working for.”
