Why Disability Rights Matter: Conor Clifford Shares His Story

Every person deserves the opportunity to live independently, participate fully in their community, and have their voice heard. Yet for many people with disabilities, barriers to accessibility, inclusion, and equal opportunities remain part of everyday life.

In this inspiring episode of Disability Matters, John Comiskey speaks with Conor Clifford, a visually impaired disability and youth rights advocate who is helping shape a more inclusive Ireland through advocacy, public engagement and community leadership.

Despite his young age, Conor has become a respected voice for disability rights. He works with numerous organisations, participates in national consultations and campaigns, and is passionate about ensuring that people with disabilities—particularly young people—have the confidence and opportunities to become active members of their communities.

As a Gaisce Youth Ambassador, Conor encourages young people with disabilities to become involved in volunteering, leadership and community life. He has also lobbied decision-makers to improve educational supports for students with disabilities and works with organisations including Comhairle na nÓg, raising awareness of the everyday challenges faced by people with disabilities across Ireland.

Drawing on both his lived experience and years of advocacy, Conor explains that disability rights are not about asking for special treatment—they are about ensuring equal opportunities for everyone.

“Disability rights are human rights. Everyone deserves the chance to participate fully in society.”

Changing Attitudes

Throughout the interview, Conor reflects on the importance of removing barriers rather than expecting people with disabilities to adapt to systems that were never designed with inclusion in mind.

While legislation and policies are important, he believes real inclusion begins with changing attitudes.

Accessibility isn’t only about ramps, lifts or accessible toilets. It also means making education, employment, transport, healthcare, information and public services accessible for everyone.

“Accessibility benefits everyone. When we build inclusive communities, everybody gains.”

The discussion highlights how relatively small changes in planning, communication and awareness can dramatically improve everyday life for thousands of people.

Empowering the Next Generation

One of Conor’s greatest passions is encouraging young people with disabilities to believe in themselves and become leaders within their communities.

Through his work as a Gaisce Youth Ambassador, he has inspired many young people to volunteer, participate in local initiatives and recognise that their voices matter.

John and Conor discuss how representation is vital—not only in politics and policymaking but also within schools, youth organisations and local communities.

“Young people with disabilities have so much to contribute. We need to make sure they have opportunities to be heard.”

Nothing About Us Without Us

The interview also explores one of the key principles of disability advocacy: “Nothing About Us Without Us.”

Conor explains why people with disabilities should always be involved in decisions that affect their lives.

Rather than making policies on behalf of people with disabilities, governments, organisations and public bodies should work alongside them to design more inclusive services.

“People with disabilities are the experts in their own lives. Listening to lived experience leads to better decisions for everyone.”

Independent Living Is About Choice

Another important theme throughout the conversation is independent living.

Conor explains that independence doesn’t necessarily mean doing everything alone—it means having the right supports to make your own choices, participate in your community and live with dignity.

John and Conor discuss the importance of accessible housing, education, employment, transport and personal assistance services in helping people live independent and fulfilling lives.

Working Together for Change

The interview also highlights the positive progress already taking place across Ireland.

Greater awareness, stronger advocacy and improved legislation have helped move disability rights forward, but Conor believes there is still much work to do.

He encourages everyone—not only people with disabilities—to become allies for inclusion.

Small actions, listening to lived experience, challenging stereotypes and removing barriers can all make a meaningful difference.

“Inclusion isn’t the responsibility of one group. It’s something we all create together.”

Looking Forward

As the conversation concludes, Conor leaves listeners with a hopeful message.

Real change happens when people speak up, work together and ensure that every voice is valued.

His work demonstrates that young advocates can make a significant impact, influencing policy, inspiring others and helping build a society where everyone has the opportunity to participate fully.

This inspiring interview is a reminder that disability inclusion benefits us all—creating stronger, fairer and more welcoming communities across Ireland.
