🎙 Disability Matters – Giving a Voice to Disability

Every Thursday at 4.00pm on Phoenix 92.5 FM, Disability Matters brings listeners inspiring conversations, practical information and powerful stories from people with lived experience of disability. Produced by BCIL and presented by John Comiskey, the programme highlights the issues that matter most to disabled people, their families, carers and the wider community.

Featured interviews this month include,

  • Taking Control of Arthritis

Arthritis is often misunderstood as simply “aches and pains” that affect older people. In reality, it is one of Ireland’s biggest causes of disability, affecting more than one million people and impacting every aspect of daily life.

Tara Regan shares practical advice for better living with arthritis and related conditions.

  • Before We Die: Why Thousands of Irish Families Are Calling for Urgent Action

A powerful conversation with Tony Murray about the need for supported housing for adults with intellectual disabilities and the importance of planning before families reach crisis point.

  • ADHD: Understanding the Challenges and Celebrating the Strengths

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is often misunderstood. Many people still associate it with children who cannot sit still in the classroom, but as Ken Kilbride, CEO of ADHD Ireland, explained the reality is far more complex.

⭐ Living Independently: Stories That Inspire

Claire Rooney – Finding Her Voice Through the Dubs

For many people, supporting Dublin GAA is a pastime. For Claire Rooney, it has been something far more meaningful—a source of confidence, friendship and belonging that has helped shape her into an advocate for people with autism and everyone living with disabilities.

A lifelong Dublin supporter, Claire has held a season ticket since 2009 and was recognised in 2012 as one of Dublin’s five greatest supporters after winning a nationwide Vodafone competition.

She was there when Dublin ended their sixteen-year wait for All-Ireland success in 2011 and has remained a passionate supporter ever since.

But beyond football lies Claire’s real passion—advocating for equality.

Living with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and epilepsy, Claire believes society must move beyond disability awareness towards genuine acceptance. “What we need is acceptance.” Claire speaks openly about barriers in employment, accessibility and attitudes, while encouraging people to stand up for their rights.

Now completing her degree in Social Justice, she hopes to build a career advocating for people with disabilities.

She credits BCIL with helping build her confidence through peer support, advocacy and independent living services.”They’ve helped me in every way possible. I don’t think I’d be where I am without them.”

Her advice to others is simple: “Don’t be afraid. Just do it. Make sure your needs get met.”

Claire’s story reminds us that inclusion begins with acceptance, opportunity and the confidence to use your own voice.

📢 Advocacy & Campaign Spotlight

BCIL Helps Launch New DFI Self-Advocacy Toolkit

Empowering disabled people to speak up for themselves has always been central to BCIL’s work. Earlier this year, the Disability Federation of Ireland (DFI) launched its new Self-Advocacy Toolkit, developed with significant input from BCIL and based on almost twenty years of peer-led self-advocacy experience.

The toolkit helps people:

  • Build confidence
  • Form self-advocacy groups
  • Run inclusive meetings
  • Engage with local decision-makers
  • Campaign for accessible communities

Speaking on Disability Matters, BCIL Development Officer Geraldine Rooney explained: “It usually starts over a cup of tea. You’re not there to change the world straight away.”

The toolkit reflects BCIL’s belief that disabled people are the experts in their own lives. As Geraldine reminds us: “It’s not about charity. It’s about rights.”

🌍 Accessible Ireland

Wheelchair-Accessible Holidays Around Ireland

Ireland is becoming an increasingly accessible destination, with more hotels, attractions, and outdoor spaces welcoming wheelchair users. Whether you’re planning a coastal escape, countryside retreat, or city break, there are plenty of options to enjoy.

In Donegal, the Great Northern Hotel in Bundoran and the Radisson Blu Hotel in Letterkenny offer accessible accommodation, with nearby attractions including Glenveagh National Park, the Roughey Cliff Walk, Fanad Lighthouse, and inclusive surfing with Liquid Therapy.

County Clare offers accessible stays at Green Acres Caravan & Camping Park on the Loop Head Peninsula, close to Loop Head Lighthouse, Vandeleur Walled Garden, and accessible cruises to Scattery Island.

In Kerry, The Lake Hotel in Killarney is well placed for exploring Killarney National Park, Muckross House and Gardens, and the Tralee to Fenit Greenway.

For a luxury break in Cork, Castlemartyr Resort provides accessible facilities near the Midleton Distillery Experience, Fota Wildlife Park, Youghal Boardwalk, and the harbour town of Cobh.

In Galway, accessible accommodation at Nest Boutique Hostel is close to Salthill Promenade, Eyre Square, the Latin Quarter, and the Spanish Arch.

Limerick offers Rathkeale House Hotel as a base for visiting the Limerick Greenway, Curraghchase Forest Park, Adare, and Askeaton.

Before travelling, it’s always advisable to contact accommodation providers and attractions to discuss your individual accessibility requirements. With a little planning, Ireland offers a growing range of accessible holidays and memorable experiences for everyone.
